WordSmart Corporation provides educational software and learning systems to individuals of all ages and abilities. Using creative audio-visual techniques to increase learning rate and retention, WordSmart products pair audio input with computerized lessons. Many schools, both domestic and overseas, corporations, and other institutions utilize WordSmart products as part of their curriculum.

Background

David A. Kay formally incorporated WordSmart Educational Technology in 1993. Mr. Kay is widely regarded as an industry pioneer and has been actively involved in the computer industry for more than three decades. As the Vice President of Marketing, Mr. Kay spearheaded the growth of KayPro Corporation (KayPro Personal Computers) from a small electronics company into a $100 million industry leader.

The seeds for the burgeoning WordSmart Corporation were planted more than 70 years ago in the ponderings of the Johnson O'Connor, a pioneer in the field of educational testing. Despite the prevailing assumption decades ago that intelligence was predetermined and immutable, O'Connor believed that intelligence was malleable. He proposed that a combination of various innate aptitudes and learned information constituted intelligence and that, for this reason, it could be heightened and improved. Evidence of significant improvement on intelligence tests after preparation seemed to argue in his favor. O'Connor focused on this dynamic component of intelligence and its relationship to an individual's level of success. He found that an extensive vocabulary was the single most important indicator of lifetime success, regardless of one's definition of success; financial reward, assured social position, or established self-worth were all benefitted by a strong vocabulary. Further, large vocabularies were inextricable predictors of success on intelligence tests.
